VEN VOISEY IN-RESIDENCE @ The Berkshire Museum

Last year the Berkshire Museum, Ferrin Gallery, and the Pittsfield Cultural Council, launched a residency project at the museum. Local painter, and Storefront Artist Project founder Maggie Mailer was the first resident.

Next month, sound, installation, performance and visual artist Ven Voisey will take up residence in the galleries.

Starting April 23, you can catch him in the galleries:

Fridays, 12pm to 4 pm and Saturdays, 10 am to 2 pm

And don’t forget to mark your calendars for a gallery presentation and discussion of his residency on:

Thursday, June 24, 5 – 7 pm

An exhibition  of work created during the residency will follow:

June 19 and run through August 29, 2010.

“Ever since visiting the Berkshire Museum five years ago, I have wanted to do something there, but until now, I was never quite certain what that might be,” said Voisey. “In particular, I like museums that incorporate a variety of subject matter: science, art, history, community… all of which Berkshire Museum has in spades.”

Ven Voisey is a multi-disciplinary artist who works in traditional and non-traditional forms. His work includes drawings and paintings, sculptural installations, sound pieces, and performances. “It is perfect to have Ven do a residency at Berkshire Museum because of how diverse his work is and how equally diverse the Museum’s own collections are. We expect there to be some interesting outcomes and new interpretations that Ven will make during the time he spends mining our collections,” said Maria Mingalone, Director of Interpretation.

Originally from northern California, Voisey is a graduate of San Francisco State University. He worked as an artist on the west coast until relocating to the Berkshires in 2003, where he did his first installation “flutter” which was created for the Contemporary Artists Center. Since then Voisey has shown locally at public and private galleries, including the Contemporary Arts Center and Ferrin Gallery. He has also created outdoor installations for Pittsfield’s Artscape public art program, and has participated in the Storefront Artist Project. Most recently, Voisey curated a show at MCLA Gallery 51, The Amazing Acoustaphotgrammitron, featuring work by artists who span the visual and audio realms.

a woman like that from Ellen Weissbrod on Vimeo.

This year marks the Berkshire International Film Festival’s 5th anniversary and its first foray into Pittsfield. Get tickets, and check out A Woman Like That, scheduled to show June 6, 2010 and other films by visiting BIFFMA online.

About A Woman Like That

Filmmaker Ellen Weissbrod merges her own coming of middle-age story with her pursuit of the truths behind the legends of 17th century female painter Artemisia Gentileschi’s dramatic art and life. This unconventional but heartfelt hunt upends typical artist biographies and delivers instead a funny, engaging and all together different kind of documentary.
a woman like that” is a freewheeling tribute to an artist whose own bold life and inspiring message leaps across centuries to speak to us all. The enduring power of storytelling – in paintings, in films and in our lives is revealed, as the filmmaker learns that who gets to tell the story matters, and that maybe she too, can be “a woman like that.”

About BIFFMA

The Berkshire International Film Festival, now in its fifth year, will screen 75 American and foreign independent feature films, documentaries and short films in Great Barrington, Mass. and Pittsfield, Mass. In addition to screenings, there will also be panel discussions, Q&A sessions with filmmakers and other events. The festival will take place June 3 through June 6, 2010.

PULL: MICHAEL BORONIEC @ Rural Intelligence.com

Portrait of the Pittsfield Artist as a Young Man

“Michael Boroniec calls himself an Art Soldier, which is fitting since he’s on the front lines of Pittsfield’s cultural revolution.  A ceramic artist and painter who graduated from Taconic High School and went to the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) on full scholarship, he returned to his hometown after graduating from RISD in 2006 to teach ceramics at his alma mater. “It was an offer that was too good to be true,” he says. “When you leave college, you lose your studio, your wheel and your kiln, and my teaching job provides me with that. My being a working artist is very inspirational for my students.” Boroniec gives lie to the old notion that those who can’t do teach.

He is part of a two-person exhibition, The Things They Left Behind, with Gerit Grimm, which opens on Saturday, April 10, at Pittsfield’s Ferrin Gallery, which is one of the leading dealers in contemporary ceramics in the United States.

The exhibition is timed to coordinate with Pittsfield’s Big Read Project in which the entire city is encouraged to read Tim O’Brien’s The Things They Carried,  a collection of short stories about the Vietnam War, and participate in events that address the war (including an exhibition of photographs of contemporary Vietnam by Joe Wheaton in the Berkshire Museum and staged readings of the book directed by Julianne Boyd at Barrington Stage Company on April 16 & 17.)”

“Once upon a time, a monster was born. We found said monster hiding under a bridge, down by the river, sometime shortly before dawn. The monster had obviously stolen a child’s feather pillow, and had lit it on fire. Those pesky monsters, the stuff that nightmares are made of…..

Really, they are harmless…
